Refills and Medication

We understand how hard it is to keep track of busy schedules, appointments, prescriptions and refills. As always, we will do our best to help!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

In order to provide the best care possible and achieve maximum benefit it is important that medication be adequately monitored. Research shows that even when children appear to be stable, they have a better response to ADHD medication when they are monitored with monthly visits! We know that this is often unrealistic, therefore...

When you are first starting or changing medications, appointments will need to be more frequent - as often as weekly when a child first starts an antidepressant and monthly for other medications.

For routine monitoring for children under the age of 18, appointments should be every 3-4 months even when your child appears to be stable and doing well.

If you are over 18, routine visits will typically be at least every 6 months. If it has been more than one year, I can only give you a one month refill to allow time to schedule a visit.

Please plan ahead and schedule a visit well in advance when you need multiple prescriptions for camp or extended travel.

WHAT IF I NEED A REFILL BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS?

If you need a refill between visits, please try to allow 1 week. We will do our best to work with you. We never want you or your child to run out of medicationSometimes pharmacies will allow us to call in a 1-2 day supply if you run out before you have your new prescription, but this is not our decision.

Please provide all of the following information by email to cathleen@lisagoldsteinmd.com, and leave a phone message at the office letting us know that you have sent in a request:
  • The best way to reach you by phone in case of questions
  • Patient's name
  • Patient's date of birth
  • The exact name of the medication including if it is "regular" or a long acting form such as XR, ER, or CD
  • The dose of the medication in milligrams (mgs) and how often you take it
  • If you prefer, "Name Brand Only" (typically much more expensive when there is a generic available)
  • Whether you need a 30 day supply or a 90 day supply for a mail order prescription
  • The name and phone number of your pharmacy for prescriptions that can be called in (ADHD stimulant medicines can NOT legally be called in)
  • Your mailing address
  • If you would like to pick up the prescription from the office, please let us know
  • Please allow time for "prior authorization" when needed
  • There are currently shortages of many generic stimulant medications including Adderall and Adderall XR. If your pharmacy tells you your medicine is not available, please call multiple pharmacies to see where it is in stock. Before you ask me to write "Name Brand Only" please confirm that you are willing to pay the sometimes substantially greater cost.

All time-sensitive issues should be communicated by phone.

Please contact Cathleen at the office for information, fees, refills and to schedule an appointment.
